How much to musicians make?

I have just come across this article, which details how much 'product' a musician would have to shift to make the US's minimum monthly wage. It does actually make quite interesting reading, especially when we are all told that Spotify etc are the future of music delivery, well having to have over 4 million plays per month to generate just over $1000 is pretty uninspiring. The conclusion seems to be selling CD's that you press yourself is the best way forward (although you still have to shift a couple of hundred per month), the biggest issue is though that CD's sales are on the decline, everyone is moving to digital channels for distribution....when was the last time you purchased a CD?The internet is liberating, the internet is an open market, but it is also decimating potential income streams for musicians (and creatives as a whole), back to the drawing board!Recording helped see off the traditional music printing press, home taping started the trend towards all music should be free, the internet both liberated and decimated music to the point of background noise, but in reality fat cat music executives and their greed is what put the final nail in the coffin of the music business as we know it. I sense a return to the times of royal court patronages for one off pieces ....perhaps (or is that film music?)PeaceNeil
